This reminds me of something I've heard in classes and such before- usually the simplest answer is the right one. Teachers would always say that the answer that you are first attracted to is usually right.
Another way I think of this is that even if the truth seems hard it ends up a lot easier than lying. With a lie you have to remember the lie, add on to it, hide the truth, etc. On the other hand if you just tell the truth all the time you have a clear conscience and don't have to try keeping your story straight.
